Should You Book a Private City Tour in Lima?

A private city tour in Lima is basically a half-day or full-day ride with your own driver and guide. Expect to cover the historic center (Plaza Mayor, Cathedral, San Francisco catacombs), then head to Miraflores and Barranco for the more modern, colorful side. Traffic is real — even with a private vehicle you’ll spend time sitting in it. The guide will do most of the talking; quality varies wildly from someone who actually knows Peruvian history to someone reading from a script. It’s comfortable, flexible, and you can skip or linger where you want. Good if you hate crowds or have limited time.

Best time is May to October (dry season). Skies are clearer, it almost never rains, and temperatures are pleasant. November to April is humid, overcast, and often drizzly — still doable but less enjoyable. Expect to pay around $130–$220 for a 4-hour private tour for two people; full-day tours with lunch run $250–$380. Solo travelers usually pay close to the two-person rate.

Pick a morning start to beat the worst traffic and heat. Skip the generic “Lima in 4 hours” if you actually care about food — book a separate half-day food tour instead. Bring cash for small tips and entrance fees that aren’t always included. The private experience is noticeably better than the big-bus tours, but it’s not magic; Lima’s charm is uneven and a good guide makes the difference.
