Panathenaic Stadium: Worth It in Athens?

The Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world built entirely from marble. Originally built in the 4th century BC and fully restored in the 19th century, it's where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896. Expect a quick 30-45 minute visit: you walk the track, sit in the ancient seats, and see the Olympic torch cauldron and a small exhibit with torches and memorabilia. It's impressive in scale but quite empty – more a photo stop and history marker than an all-day attraction. The audio guide is decent if you want context; otherwise the site is straightforward.

Best time to visit is spring (April-June) or fall (September-October) when Athens weather is pleasant and crowds are manageable. In summer it gets brutally hot with zero shade. Expect to pay around €8-12 for a standard ticket; combined city passes can drop it lower. Skip the guided tour unless you're really into Olympic history – it's not necessary. Do buy the audio guide if you're short on time but want the stories. Go early morning to avoid the worst of the heat and tour groups.
