Paracas & Huacachina Day Trip from Lima

This is a long but doable day: you leave Lima around 4–5am, drive 3.5–4 hours to Paracas for a boat trip to see sea lions, penguins and birds on the Ballestas Islands, then continue to Huacachina oasis for dune buggy rides and sandboarding. The landscape is dramatic desert-meets-ocean; the boat ride can be bumpy and windy, and the dunes are bigger and steeper than most people expect. You’ll be back in Lima between 9pm and midnight depending on traffic. It’s tiring but gives you a solid taste of two very different Peruvian landscapes in one shot.

Best time is May–October when the coast is drier and the sea is calmer. December–March can be foggy and the boat trips get canceled more often. Expect to pay around $90–140 per person for a decent group tour that includes transport, boat ticket, buggy/sandboard session, and basic lunch. Private tours push closer to $200+.

Pick the version that includes both the boat tour and the dunes; skip the ones that add a long winery stop unless you really want wine tasting, because it eats into dune time. Bring a windbreaker, sunglasses, and a buff or scarf; the sand gets everywhere. If you only have one day outside Lima and want variety, this trip delivers. If you hate early starts or long drives, stay in Lima or overnight in Huacachina instead.
