Budapest Parliament Tour: Worth It?

The Hungarian Parliament is an impressive neo-Gothic building that dominates the Pest side of the Danube. The interior tour lasts about 45-60 minutes and takes you through the grand staircase, the ornate Hall of the Dome with its 16-sided cupola, and one of the legislative chambers. Expect plenty of gold leaf, stained glass, and Hungarian historical detail. Groups are usually capped at around 20-30 people and move at a steady pace; it's informative but not especially intimate. Security is airport-style, so leave big bags behind.

Spring and autumn are the best times – April-May and September-October give you comfortable temperatures and far smaller crowds than summer. In peak season (June-August) expect longer waits and hotter conditions inside. Tickets usually cost around €20-35 for non-EU adults depending on whether you choose a standard guided tour or one with an audio guide. EU citizens often pay half. Book at least a few days ahead, especially in summer; same-day tickets are possible but risky.

Tip: Take the standard guided tour in your own language rather than the audio-guide option – the live guides are generally good and you can ask questions. Skip the add-on photo package or Danube cruise combo unless you're short on time; the building itself is the main event. Wear comfortable shoes and modest clothing – shoulders and knees should be covered.
