These excursions take you out of Santiago into the Andes, usually Cajón del Maipo, for a full day of mountains, a short walk or viewpoint stop, and a relaxed picnic with Chilean wine, cheeses, charcuterie, snacks, and juice. Expect a mix of scenic driving, some history about the area, then settling down for the meal with views of the mountains or a reservoir. Groups are often small, the pace is easy, and you’ll be back in the city by early evening. It’s a solid way to see green valleys and Andean scenery without planning transport or food yourself.
Best time is spring (October–December) or early autumn (March–April) when temperatures are pleasant and the risk of summer heat or winter rain is lower. Summer works but can be hot and crowded; winter trips still run but expect colder conditions and possible snow. Expect to pay around $80–150 per person including transport, guide, and the picnic with one bottle of wine shared.
Pick the smaller-group option if you can – it feels more relaxed and you’re not stuck with 40 other people at lunch. Skip the folk-dance version unless you specifically enjoy tourist performances; the plain nature-and-picnic trips give you more time to actually enjoy the quiet and the views.
