Princes' Islands Boat Trip from Istanbul

A full-day boat trip to the Princes' Islands gives you a breather from Istanbul's crowds and traffic. You spend most of the day on the water and on car-free islands where people get around by bike, horse carriage, or on foot. Expect a mix of scenic cruising past the city's landmarks, a few hours wandering Büyükada (the largest island) with its old wooden mansions and pine trees, plus a couple of quick stops at smaller islands. It's relaxed rather than exciting – good for photos, fresh seafood lunches, and escaping the summer heat in the Marmara Sea breeze. The boat can get crowded on weekends and the return leg is often slow.

Best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–October) when it's warm but not brutally hot and the boats are less packed. In July and August the islands are packed with day-trippers. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a standard full-day tour including transport; private or smaller boats cost more. Food and drinks on the islands are extra and add up quickly.

Pick the tour that stops at Büyükada and gives you at least three solid hours there – that's the one worth doing. Skip the ones that rush you through four islands with only 45 minutes each; you'll spend more time on the boat than actually enjoying the place. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes – the hills are steeper than they look.
