Reunification Palace: Worth Visiting?

The Reunification Palace is a straightforward historical site rather than a jaw-dropping tourist attraction. You walk through the same rooms and corridors where South Vietnam’s government operated until April 1975, when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates. Expect to see the famous balcony, the basement war rooms with old maps and radios, the president’s office, and a few preserved vintage cars in the courtyard. It takes 45-90 minutes to visit at a normal pace. The building itself feels a bit empty and dated, but the history hits harder if you already know the basic story of the Vietnam War. Audio guides are available and decent; many people prefer them over joining large tour groups that move too quickly.

Best time to visit is the dry season (December to April) when it’s less humid and rain won’t ruin your photos. Go early morning (first hour after opening) to avoid crowds and the worst heat. Expect to pay around $4-6 for a standard adult ticket. Half-day tours that include the palace and a quick city drive usually run $15-35 depending on group size and whether transport is included. Skip the overpriced combo tours that tack on War Remnants Museum unless you specifically want both in one morning. Just buy the ticket on-site or online and go at your own pace – it’s one of the easiest major sights in the city to handle independently.
