A river boat tour is one of the smartest ways to see Bangkok. The Chao Phraya River is the city's historic main artery, and riding the water lets you skip horrific traffic while getting a completely different view of temples, old wooden houses, and river life. Expect a mix of impressive sights (Wat Arun, Grand Palace from the water) and very everyday Bangkok — laundry hanging over the canal, kids swimming, longtail boats dodging each other. The hop-on hop-off boats are convenient for flexible sightseeing; smaller longtail canal tours feel more local but can be noisy and occasionally smelly when they pass certain neighborhoods.
Best time is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Avoid the hottest months (March–May) and the heavy rainy season (especially September–October) unless you don't mind getting soaked. Expect to pay around $10–20 for a basic hop-on hop-off day pass on the Chao Phraya. Private longtail tours or dinner cruises usually run $30–70+ depending on duration and inclusions.
Honest tip: Take the public river express boat (Chao Phraya Express) at least once — it's cheap, authentic, and surprisingly efficient. Skip the overpriced dinner cruises with the cheesy cabaret shows unless you really want the novelty. For canals, choose a morning tour; the light is better and the heat hasn't kicked in yet.
