Zurich Limmat River Boat Ride: Worth It?

The Limmat river boat ride is a relaxed, no-nonsense way to see Zurich’s old town, bridges, and the lower end of the lake from the water. Expect a comfortable 50–75 minute trip that drifts past the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and the historic guild houses at a gentle pace. It’s not a party boat or a luxury yacht – just a practical, pleasant ride with decent views on both sides. Most people sit outside when weather allows. The boats run frequently in summer and are rarely packed except on perfect weekends.

Best time is May to early September. Late afternoon or early evening sails are ideal: softer light, fewer day-trippers, and you get the city starting to glow. Spring and autumn trips are still fine but colder and shorter. Expect to pay around CHF 25–45 per person depending on whether you choose a simple public boat ticket or a slightly longer narrated or “sunset” version. It’s not expensive for what it is.

Tip: stick with the regular public Limmat boats that run the city–lake loop – they’re frequent, cheap, and give you the best flexibility. Skip the private “floating apero” tours unless you specifically want drinks and a crowd; they’re noisier and cost twice as much for similar views. Bring a jacket even in summer – the breeze on the water is stronger than you expect.
