Should You Drive the Road to Hana?

The Road to Hana is a 65-mile winding drive along Maui’s northeast coast that takes you through dense rainforest, past waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and dramatic sea cliffs. Expect the actual driving to take 2.5–3 hours one way if you don’t stop, but most people turn it into a full-day trip (8–12 hours round-trip) with frequent photo and swim stops. The road is narrow, has over 600 curves, and one-lane bridges, so it’s more tiring than it looks. You’ll see plenty of tourists, food trucks selling banana bread, and a few crowded but beautiful spots like Twin Falls and Pipiwai Trail. It’s scenic but not empty wilderness.

Best time is April–October when rain is less likely and roads are safer. Winter months bring bigger waves, slick pavement, and higher chance of flash floods. Expect to pay around $150–$350 total for two people: gas and a rental car, snacks, park entry fees, plus either a basic self-guided audio tour or a small-group van tour if you don’t want to drive. Private guides sit at the high end.

Honest tip: Do the full drive to Hana and the Pipiwai Trail to the bamboo forest and 400-ft waterfall — that part is genuinely impressive. Skip spending long time at the first few crowded waterfalls near Paia; they’re nice but get jammed early. If you’re not comfortable on mountain roads, book a tour instead of driving yourself. Bring reef-safe bug spray, water, and cash for the food stands.
