Saigon River Cruise: Worth It?

A Saigon River cruise is a low-key way to see the city from a different angle. Expect a mix of colonial buildings, modern skyscrapers, and gritty riverbanks with working boats and floating debris. Most trips last 1–2 hours and stay relatively central. Daytime tours feel more like transport with commentary; sunset or dinner cruises are calmer and more popular. The river isn’t especially scenic compared to Halong Bay, but it’s an easy, air-conditioned break from the city heat and traffic. Service is usually friendly though not always deeply informative.

Best time is December to March when it’s dry and slightly cooler. Avoid the June–October rainy season if you dislike sudden downpours that can cancel or reroute trips. Expect to pay around $15–40 per person for a standard sightseeing cruise; dinner versions with a basic meal run $35–70. Private boats cost significantly more.

Pick a sunset departure for the best light and fewer mosquitoes. Skip the dinner cruise unless you really want the meal — the food is usually average and you’re stuck on the boat longer. Book something with decent reviews for English-speaking staff and clean vessels; the cheapest no-name operators can feel chaotic.
