Expect a mix of impressive views and very Indian harbor chaos. You’ll sail past the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace, and the Naval Dockyard while dodging ferries, fishing boats, and container ships. The water is not turquoise; it’s brownish and busy. Sunsets can be spectacular when the haze cooperates, but don’t expect silence or solitude. Most trips last 1–2 hours. Private sunset sails on mid-size yachts feel the most comfortable; smaller shared boats can get cramped and loud once the music starts.
The best time is November to early March when the sea is calmer and the weather is pleasant. Avoid June–September (monsoon) completely; most operators shut down and the harbor gets rough. Expect to pay around $75–$160 per person for a private or semi-private sailing trip depending on boat size, duration, and whether food or drinks are included. Group tours can dip lower but you lose flexibility.
Tip: Book a private sunset sail with a maximum of 6–8 people if your budget allows; it’s noticeably better than the packed evening departures. Skip the “party yacht” options that advertise loud music and unlimited booze – they turn into floating discos and you’ll see very little of the city. Bring motion-sickness tablets if you’re even slightly sensitive; the harbor chop can surprise people.
