Auckland calls itself the City of Sails for good reason. On a typical trip you'll motor out of the Viaduct, raise sails in the Hauraki Gulf, and spend a few hours tacking between islands with the city skyline behind you. Expect 10-25 knots of sea breeze, some swell when the wind picks up, and temperatures that feel cooler once you're on the water. The better trips include a simple lunch or snacks; the longer ones let you swim off the boat in sheltered bays. It's genuinely relaxing if you like being on the water, but it can be chilly and bouncy if the weather turns.
Best time is December through March when the prevailing southwesterlies are lighter and the water is warmest. Shoulder months (October-November and April) are cheaper and less crowded but can be windier or cooler. Expect to pay around $80–$180 per person for a half-day sail, $200–$350 for a full day with lunch. Evening harbor cruises with dinner usually sit at $150–$220.
Pick a proper sailing yacht over a large powered catamaran if you actually want to sail rather than just be ferried around. Skip the ultra-cheap big-group booze cruises unless your main goal is drinking with a view. Bring a windbreaker and sunscreen no matter what the forecast says; the weather changes fast.
