Most sandboarding tours from Lima take you about 1–2 hours south to the giant dunes around Chilca or combine it with a longer day trip to Huacachina. Expect a bumpy 4x4 ride up and down the dunes, then sliding down on either a proper sandboard (standing, with boots and bindings) or the more common belly-board option. The standing version is more fun once you get the hang of it but harder on your balance and knees. The whole dune portion usually lasts 1–2 hours; longer tours add beach stops or the Huacachina oasis. It’s a lively, slightly chaotic experience with lots of screaming, sand everywhere, and decent photo opportunities.
Best time is the shoulder seasons (April–May and September–November) when it’s cooler and less crowded than peak summer (December–March). Avoid winter (June–August) if you don’t want cold, foggy days at the coast. Expect to pay around $60–$90 for a half-day tour from Lima that includes transport, equipment, and guide. Full-day trips that add Paracas or Huacachina usually run $130–$190.
Tip: Choose the smaller-group tours that focus only on the dunes near Chilca if you want more actual boarding time and less driving. Skip the very cheapest options — they often rush you and give you worn-out boards. Bring a buff or bandana; the sand gets in everything.
