Saqqara Necropolis Tour: Worth It?

Saqqara is a huge, atmospheric ancient burial ground about 45 minutes south of central Cairo. Expect sand, heat, and an impressive spread of ruins: the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser (the world’s oldest large stone building), smaller pyramids, mastaba tombs with beautiful reliefs, and the Serapeum where sacred Apis bulls were buried. A typical half-day tour runs 4–6 hours including transport; full-day versions often add Memphis and a carpet school stop. The site is large, mostly unshaded, and involves walking on uneven sand and stairs. It feels far less crowded than Giza, which many travelers find refreshing.

Best time to visit is November to March when it’s cooler; avoid midday in summer if you can. Expect to pay around $45–90 per person for a decent private half-day tour with an Egyptologist guide and driver (cheaper for shared groups, more if it’s just you). A good guide makes a big difference here because the carvings and history are subtle.

Tip: Prioritize the Step Pyramid complex and at least one painted tomb (such as those in the nobles’ area). Skip the Memphis open-air museum if you’re short on time or energy – it’s mediocre and adds little. Wear good walking shoes, bring plenty of water, and go early in the day before the heat builds.
