Saqqara is one of the best half-day trips you can do from Cairo. Expect a mix of the world’s first pyramid (the Step Pyramid of Djoser), some beautifully preserved tombs with vivid reliefs, and usually a quick stop at Memphis and the Red and Bent Pyramids at Dahshur. The site is large, sandy, and exposed, so you’ll do a fair bit of walking. Guides typically focus on the history of how pyramid-building evolved here, which makes the visit far more interesting than just wandering around on your own. It’s noticeably less crowded than Giza, especially in the early morning.
The best time to go is November to March when it’s cooler; avoid midday in summer unless you enjoy 40°C heat. Expect to pay around $60–110 per person for a decent private half-day tour including guide, transport, and entrance fees (cheaper if sharing with others, more if it’s a luxury vehicle and top guide). Group tours can dip below $50 but often feel rushed.
Tip: Prioritize Saqqara and Dahshur over Memphis—the latter is mostly a small open-air museum with a giant fallen statue and feels skippable. Wear proper walking shoes, bring a hat and plenty of water, and ask your guide to show you at least one tomb with intact color (they’re the real highlight).
