Scuba Diving in Nassau: What to Know

Nassau offers easy access to decent wreck and reef diving just a short boat ride from shore. Expect clear but not crystal-blue water, lots of tropical fish, and a handful of interesting wrecks like the Mahoney. Most dives are shallow (30-70 ft), suitable for beginners and experienced divers alike. The experience is straightforward: you’ll do two-tank morning trips, with surface intervals on the boat or a small beach. It’s a solid half-day activity if you’re already in Nassau, but don’t expect untouched Caribbean wilderness; there will be other boats around.

Best time is December through April when seas are calmer and visibility often hits 60-80 ft. Summer and fall bring warmer water but higher chance of rain, wind, and occasional sargassum. Expect to pay around $120–$190 for a two-tank dive trip including gear and pickup from central Nassau hotels. Add-ons like Nitrox or afternoon dives push it toward the higher end.

Pick a small-group operator that goes to the wrecks rather than the mass-market snorkel-and-dive combos aimed at cruise passengers. Skip the super-cheap hotel-pool “discover scuba” sessions if you actually want to see the ocean; they’re mostly a sales funnel. Bring your own computer if you have one and always check recent diver reviews for water conditions before booking.
