Panama City diving means warm Caribbean water with decent visibility (usually 40-80 ft) and a mix of wrecks, reefs, and the occasional nurse shark or turtle. It's not world-class like Bocas or Coiba, but it's convenient if you're already in the capital. Most dives are boat trips 30-60 minutes from the marinas near downtown or Amador. Expect gentle currents, lots of soft corals, and sites suitable for beginners to intermediate divers. Advanced divers may find it a bit tame after a couple of days.
Best time is December to April when the dry season brings calmer seas and better visibility. June-November is rainy season with rougher water, more runoff, and lower viz—skip it unless you're on a tight schedule. A two-tank day trip will run you $150-250 including gear and lunch; add $50-80 for a refresher or Discover Scuba if you're not certified. Night dives and wreck specialties push the upper end.
Pick a operator that actually visits the better outer reefs instead of the closer, beaten-up sites. Bring your own computer and mask if you have them; rental gear is functional but often well-used. Skip the packaged 'dive + city tour' deals—they rush both experiences.
