Sea kayaking in Helsinki gives you a completely different view of the city: quiet, rocky islands, clear water, and almost no other people once you get a few hundred meters from the launch point. Expect a relaxed paddle rather than a hardcore workout. Most half-day tours head into the eastern archipelago where you weave between small islands, stop for a coffee break on a rock, and get decent chances to see birds and the occasional seal. The water is usually calm inside the archipelago, but wind and waves can pick up quickly if the weather turns. It's suitable for beginners with decent upper-body fitness; no previous experience is required on standard guided trips.
The best time is June to early September. Late June through August offers the warmest water (15–20°C) and longest days, though July can be crowded on weekends. May and September are quieter and cheaper but colder – expect water around 10–12°C and the need for a proper drysuit. Expect to pay around €65–95 for a 3-hour guided group tour including equipment and instruction. Full-day or private options run €130–180.
Pick a morning departure if the forecast is good – the light is nicer and the wind is usually lighter. Skip sunset tours unless you're an experienced paddler; the return journey in the dark can get chilly and the logistics are more complicated. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and a change of clothes in case you get wet, and don't underestimate how tiring paddling against even a light headwind can be on the way back.
