Is Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium Worth It?

It's a small but well-presented aquarium built inside old sewage tanks. Expect to spend 45–90 minutes total. The underwater tunnel with rays and sharks gliding overhead is the clear highlight, along with the penguin colony. The rest (jellyfish, seahorses, small reef tanks) feels a bit dated and repetitive. It’s clean, the animals look healthy, but it’s nowhere near the scale of big international aquariums. Crowds can build quickly around the tunnel and penguin feedings, so go early if you can.

Best time is November to April when days are longer and weather is better for pairing it with other outdoor activities. Shoulder seasons (Oct, May) are quieter. Expect to pay around NZ$45–55 for standard entry. The shark snorkel or “Penguin Passport” experiences roughly double the price and are only worth it if you really love those animals. The Auckland Zoo combo ticket is genuinely useful if you plan to visit both — it saves money and gives you a full-day itinerary without feeling rushed.
