Should You Visit the Sears Tower Ledge?

The Ledge at Willis Tower (still called Sears Tower by locals) is a set of glass boxes that extend from the 103rd floor, letting you stand 1,353 feet above the city streets with nothing but transparent walls and floor between you and the ground. Expect a short line for the elevators, a decent but not world-class photo op, and a crowded observation deck. The actual ledge visit lasts only a couple of minutes per group. It's genuinely thrilling for anyone who doesn't mind heights and fun for kids, but if you're even slightly nervous about glass floors, the regular indoor viewing area is plenty high enough. The whole visit takes 45-90 minutes depending on crowds.

Best time is a clear weekday morning right after opening, ideally spring or fall. Summer weekends get packed and the views can be hazy; winter offers crisp air but brutal wind at street level. Expect to pay around $35-55 per adult for standard timed tickets. Add another $25-45 if you want the fast-track or a bundled city pass.

Pick the basic Skydeck ticket and go early; skip the overpriced audio tour and any add-ons that promise "VIP" photos. Wear grippy shoes if it's wet out—the glass gets slippery fast.
