Expect a fast boat ride to a shallow reef or sandbar where Caribbean reef sharks cruise in. The water is usually 15-30 feet deep with good visibility. Guides chum the water so you’ll see 8-15 sharks, sometimes more. They’re generally chill but you stay on the surface snorkeling while they circle below and around you. The whole experience lasts about 2-3 hours including travel. It feels wild but controlled; the sharks are used to people and rarely show aggression.
Best time is December through April when the water is cooler and clearer. Summer works too but visibility can drop with rain and plankton. Expect to pay around $150-250 per person for a half-day trip from Nassau, including gear and a basic lunch. Private or small-group options push toward the higher end.
Pick a smaller boat with 10 or fewer snorkelers if you can; the sharks feel less like a crowded feeding frenzy. Skip the add-on “swim with sharks” cage-free experiences if you’re at all nervous—standard snorkel-from-surface trips give you the thrill without extra risk. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have a good fit; rental gear is hit or miss.
