Skansen in Stockholm: Worth It?

Skansen is an open-air museum on Djurgården that shows how Sweden used to live. Expect a large hilly park with around 150 relocated historic buildings, farmsteads, a small zoo, and people in period clothing demonstrating old crafts. It's pleasant but can feel like a long walk between exhibits. The animal area is modest – think bears, wolves, lynx and moose rather than a full zoo. Most visitors spend 3–5 hours there. In summer it's lively with music and dancing; the rest of the year it's much quieter and some houses close earlier.

Expect to pay around $25–40 for a regular adult ticket depending on season and whether you add extras. Spring and early autumn are the smartest times – good weather without the worst summer crowds. Avoid peak July weekends if you dislike slow-moving groups. One solid tip: rent the audio guide or join a short live tour for the first hour; it makes the buildings far more interesting. Skip the restaurants inside if you're on a budget – the food is average and overpriced. Bring a picnic or eat at the excellent spots just outside the entrance before you go in.
