A day trip to the snow from Santiago is straightforward but not a true ski vacation. Expect a long bus ride (about 1.5–2 hours each way) up a winding mountain road to resorts like Valle Nevado. Once there you’ll get 3–5 hours on the slopes or just playing in the snow. The experience is crowded on weekends, the terrain is geared more toward intermediates than experts, and altitude can hit you if you’re not used to it. It’s a convenient way to see Andean snow without renting a car, but it feels more like a taster than a proper ski day.
The season runs mid-June to early October, with July and August offering the most reliable snow. Book a full-day tour that includes transport, lift ticket, and basic gear rental if you need it. Expect to pay around $150–250 per person for a standard package; add $50–80 if you want a smaller group or better equipment. Food and drinks on the mountain are expensive.
Pick a weekday departure to avoid the worst crowds and longer lift lines. Skip the snow-tubing add-ons unless you have kids—they’re overpriced and eat into your actual ski time. If you’re a strong skier, consider whether two full days at the resort (with an overnight) would be more satisfying than rushing back to Santiago the same evening.
