Expect warm, calm water with decent visibility and a decent amount of fish and soft corals once you get away from the busier beaches. The snorkeling itself is pleasant rather than world-class; you'll see parrotfish, tangs, maybe a turtle or two, but the reefs are not as pristine as in places like the Caymans or Bonaire. Most trips put you in the water for 30-45 minutes at one or two shallow reef spots. The boat ride and time on the water are often the bigger part of the day. It's a solid half-day activity if you're already in Montego Bay and want to get in the sea without committing to a full scuba trip.
Best time is December through April when the water is flattest and visibility is usually better. June to November is hurricane season; rain and wind can make the water cloudy and the ride bumpy. Expect to pay around $35-65 per person for a basic half-day snorkel trip including gear and transport from your hotel. Private or small-group options run $80-120. Avoid the big party catamaran tours if you actually want to snorkel in peace; they're loud, crowded, and the booze starts flowing early. Stick to smaller operators that focus on the reef stops rather than the floating bar experience. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; the rental gear is often well-used.
