Should You Hike Mayfield Falls from Montego Bay?

Mayfield Falls is a refreshing river hike about 1 hour 10 minutes from Montego Bay. You walk upstream through a series of small waterfalls and natural pools, holding ropes in places, climbing over rocks, and swimming in deeper sections. The full experience takes around two hours and includes a return hike on a shaded nature trail. It's moderately physical—expect wet rocks, some uneven footing, and constant water—so it's more adventurous than a simple garden stroll but not extreme. The setting is genuinely pretty with lots of greenery and small cascades, though it can feel crowded when multiple groups are in the river at once.

The best time to visit is December to April when rainfall is lower and the river flow is safer and more comfortable. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person from Montego Bay including round-trip transport, guide, entry, lunch, and a drink. Water shoes are essential; bring your own or plan to rent them there. Skip the add-on horseback ride if offered—most people find it unnecessary. One solid tip: go early in the day if possible. The water stays cool and the groups tend to be smaller before lunch.
