Snorkeling Silfra: What You Need to Know

Snorkeling Silfra means floating in 2°C crystal-clear water in the gap between the North American and Eurasian plates. Visibility often exceeds 100 meters, so you’ll see every rock, algae strand, and tiny fish in ridiculous detail. The snorkel itself lasts about 30–40 minutes; you’re in a drysuit, so the cold is manageable, but your face and hands still feel it. The experience is more serene drift than active swimming – the gentle current carries you while you stare at the otherworldly underwater landscape. It’s genuinely unique, but it’s also a cold, expensive, and somewhat logistical day trip from Reykjavik (about an hour’s drive to Thingvellir National Park).

Best time is May to September when roads are easy and daylight is long. June–August sees the most crowds and highest prices; shoulder months can be slightly cheaper and quieter. Expect to pay around $190–280 per person depending on whether you join a group from Reykjavik or meet on location and whether photos are included. Drysuit snorkeling is the standard – wetsuits are rarely offered here because the water is so cold.

Tip: Book the version that includes pickup from Reykjavik if you don’t want to drive; the “meet on location” option saves money but adds hassle. Skip the overpriced “premium” photo packages – guides usually take good shots and share them for free anyway. If you get cold easily or hate being in very cold water, this might not be for you no matter how clear the visibility is.
