Expect warm, clear water with decent reefs and plenty of tropical fish. Most trips visit 2-3 spots, usually including the calmer bays around Nusa Lembongan or the east coast. The boat ride can be bumpy, especially if the wind picks up, and you'll spend a few hours in the water with a guide pointing out fish. It's a solid half-day activity but not mind-blowing compared to places like the Great Barrier Reef or Raja Ampat. Crowds are common at the popular sites.
The dry season from May to September offers the best visibility and calmest seas. December to March is riskier with rain and rougher water that can stir up sediment. Expect to pay around $45–$90 per person depending on whether you go on a shared boat or a smaller private trip. Gear is usually included but quality varies.
Pick a smaller group tour (under 15 people) that visits fewer but better sites rather than the cheapest mass boats that hit overcrowded spots. Skip the tours that bundle too many activities like land tours or multiple islands in one day – you'll end up rushed and tired. Bring your own snorkel if you have one that fits well; rental masks often leak.
