Snorkeling Near Liberia, Costa Rica

Expect warm, greenish water with decent but not world-class visibility (usually 5-15m). You'll see parrotfish, sergeant majors, tangs, and the occasional ray or small turtle. Most trips head to nearby rocky shores or the Catalinas Islands; the boat ride itself can be bumpy and wet. It's a solid half-day activity if you're based in Liberia or the northern beaches, but it's not the pristine Caribbean snorkeling people sometimes imagine.

The dry season (December to April) is best for calmer seas and better visibility. June to October is cheaper and quieter but often sees rain, wind, and reduced water clarity. Expect to pay around $60-110 per person for a half-day tour including gear, snacks or lunch, and transport from your hotel. Private or small-group options push toward the higher end.

Pick a boat trip to the Catalinas if you want more marine life and a proper snorkel session; beach snorkeling right at some resorts is convenient but usually disappointing with poor visibility. Skip full-day tours unless you specifically want the longer boat time; the extra hours rarely improve the snorkeling enough to justify the cost or fatigue.
