Dallas State Fair: Worth It?

The Texas State Fair in Dallas is a big, loud, crowded classic. Expect a full sensory overload of fried food, livestock barns, live music, rides, shopping, and people-watching on a massive scale. It runs for 24 days in late September and early October. That’s the only time it happens, so your decision is mostly about whether those specific dates work for your trip. Mid-week visits (Tuesday–Thursday) are noticeably less crowded and slightly cheaper than weekends. Go early in the run if you want milder weather; later in October it can get hot or rainy.

Expect to pay around $25–$35 for admission per adult. Once inside, budget another $40–$70 per person for food, drinks, and a few rides or games if you’re doing it properly. Serious fair-goers often spend $80–$120 total. The best stuff is the iconic fried foods (pick a few you’re genuinely curious about, not everything), the animal barns, and the people-watching. Skip the overpriced carnival games and most midway rides unless you have kids; they’re the same as any fair and the lines are long.
