Stone Mountain Skylift: Worth It?

The Skylift is a fast Swiss-style cable car that climbs 825 feet up the sheer north face of Stone Mountain in about six minutes. At the top you get 360-degree views stretching to downtown Atlanta on clear days, plus access to walking trails, the summit plaza, and the giant carving below. The ride itself is smooth and surprisingly quiet; expect a mix of families, casual hikers, and tour groups. The mountain is exposed up there, so wind and sun can be strong. The full park experience usually takes 2–4 hours including the ride, short summit walk, and return.

Best time is spring (March–May) or fall (September–early November) when temperatures are comfortable and visibility is usually good. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms that can shut the lift down; winter can be cold and windy but the crowds are much lighter. Expect to pay around $35–55 per adult for a basic park admission + Skylift ticket combo; kids are cheaper. Adding the laser show or other attractions pushes it higher.

Honest tips: Ride the Skylift up and walk down the trail if your knees are decent — it’s a much better experience than riding both ways. Skip the overpriced summit snack bar and bring water and a few snacks instead.
