Sumo Morning Practice in Tokyo: Worth It?

Sumo morning practice is one of the most authentic sports experiences you can have in Tokyo. You sit on cushions in a small stable watching 15–25 wrestlers go through their routine: stretches, shiko stomping, pushing drills, and occasional full bouts. It’s quiet, intense, and surprisingly intimate. Expect to stay the full session (usually finishing around 10am). The wrestlers are focused; this isn’t a show put on for tourists. Phones are usually banned or restricted, which actually improves the experience.

Best time is January, May, or September when the pros are in town preparing for the upcoming tournament. Avoid December–January if you dislike freezing stables. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on whether you go with a small group, have an English-speaking guide, or get slightly better seating. Independent access is almost impossible without connections.

Pick the version that includes a former wrestler or sumo reporter as guide — their explanations turn it from “interesting” to genuinely educational. Skip the add-on chanko-nabe lunch unless you’re starving; it’s usually mediocre and overpriced compared to what you can get elsewhere in town. Wear layers and comfortable pants — you’ll be sitting on the floor for two hours.
