Expect sweeping views of the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, and the city sprawl as the sun drops. Most rooftop bars are on mid-range hotels in Plaka, Monastiraki or Thisseio. They get crowded after 7pm with a mix of tourists and locals; the vibe is relaxed but lively, with lounge music and clinking glasses. In summer the heat lingers into the night so you’ll be grateful for any breeze up there. Spring and early autumn are actually the sweet spot—warm enough to sit outside but far less packed and sweaty than July and August.
Expect to pay around €12–22 for a cocktail or €6–10 for a beer or glass of wine. A couple of drinks plus a shared snack plate will run €40–70 for two people. It’s not cheap, but you’re mainly paying for the view. Go at golden hour for the best light; later it’s mostly about the atmosphere and people-watching.
Pick a place with a clear Acropolis view and order something Greek—local gin and tonic with mastika or a crisp Assyrtiko wine. Skip the complicated signature cocktails; they’re usually overpriced and mediocre. If you want to hit a few spots without planning, a small-group bar hop saves hassle and gets you inside places that sometimes have queues. Just don’t expect to eat a full dinner up there—portions are small and prices high. Go for the sunset, have two drinks, then head down to a taverna.
