Expect a relaxed paddle on flat, protected Baltic water with constant views of the Helsinki shoreline, islands, and the odd sauna. Tours are usually 2–3 hours and stay close to the coast, so you don’t need to be an athlete. The water is clean but cold outside of summer; most operators supply wetsuits, boards, and basic instruction. It’s genuinely peaceful once you get 200 meters from shore, but you’ll share the water with ferries, kayakers, and the occasional motorboat. The city looks surprisingly different from sea level.
Best time is mid-June to mid-August when water temperature is tolerable (16–20 °C) and daylight lasts forever. May and September are possible if you don’t mind a thicker wetsuit and cooler air. Expect to pay around €55–85 for a guided morning or sunset tour including gear. Simple rentals without a guide run €25–40 per hour.
Pick a small-group guided tour from the Lapinlahti or Kaivopuisto area if it’s your first time; the guides are usually good and the routes are scenic without being overly long. Skip the big “SUP yoga” or party-regatta events unless that’s exactly what you want; they’re more social than peaceful. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and a change of clothes; you will get wet.
