Expect a 1.5 to 2-hour lesson that starts with a quick beach safety talk, then moves into shallow water for paddling, popping up, and catching small waves. Most lessons happen at Carcavelos or nearby beaches west of Lisbon – the waves are usually gentle and beginner-friendly. You'll get a wetsuit and board provided. The experience is more about fun and basic technique than riding clean waves all session; don't expect to be surfing like a pro after one class. Groups are often 4–8 people with one instructor, so patience is useful.
The best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October) when water is warmer and swells are smaller and more consistent. Winter brings bigger waves and colder water that demands thicker gear. Expect to pay around €45–€65 for a standard group lesson including equipment. Private or “luxury” options with smaller groups or transport from central Lisbon run €100–€150+ and aren't worth it for most first-timers.
Pick a morning lesson to avoid afternoon wind and crowds. Skip anything advertised as “luxury” or private unless you have money to burn – the standard group classes are perfectly fine and patient with beginners. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes; the rest is supplied.
