Surf Lessons in Maui: What You Need to Know

Expect a fun but humbling introduction to surfing. Most beginner lessons last about two hours: 20-30 minutes on the beach learning how to pop up, then the rest in the water with an instructor pushing you into waves. You’ll spend a lot of time falling, which is normal and part of the fun. The waves in Maui are generally forgiving for beginners compared to many places, but you’ll still get tired fast and drink some saltwater. Lessons usually include board and rash guard; you just need swimwear, sunscreen, and a towel.

The best time is spring and summer (April–September) when the surf is smaller and more consistent on the south and west shores. Winter brings bigger, rougher surf that’s often unsuitable for true beginners. Expect to pay around $150–$250 for a private two-hour lesson; group lessons run $80–$130 per person. Private is worth it if you want faster feedback and fewer frustrations.

Tip: Book a private morning lesson if your budget allows – the water is calmer, wind is lighter, and you avoid the afternoon crowds. Skip the big-group “surf camp” style options unless you’re on a tight budget; the instructor-to-student ratio is usually too low to learn much in one session.
