Swimming in Lake Geneva: What You Need to Know

Lake Geneva’s water is clean, cold, and refreshing. In summer it usually sits between 20–24°C, clear enough to see the bottom in many spots. Expect a proper alpine-lake experience: no waves, very little current, and stunning views of the Alps and the city. The swimming areas range from simple pebble beaches with grassy spots to proper lidos with changing rooms, lockers, and sometimes a diving platform. It’s popular with locals, so it can get busy on hot weekends but still feels relaxed compared to Mediterranean beaches.

The best time is mid-June through early September. July and August are warmest and most reliable. Expect to pay around $8–20 for a full day at a proper lido with facilities. Free swimming spots exist but usually lack toilets, shade, or easy access. A short boat ride across the lake adds variety and lets you swim from a different shore; these typically cost $15–35 round-trip depending on distance and boat type.

Pick a lido with a lifeguard and proper infrastructure if you want comfort; skip the tiny overcrowded city-center piers in peak afternoon heat. Bring water shoes – the bottom is often rocky or weedy. Go in the morning when the water is calmest and the crowds are thinner.
