The Tamsui riverside bike path is a flat, paved trail that follows the Tamsui River from the old port town up toward Guandu and sometimes further. You’ll ride past mangrove wetlands, fishing boats, and some surprisingly good views of the river and distant mountains. It’s relaxed rather than spectacular—think pleasant scenery, fresh air, and locals exercising rather than jaw-dropping sights. Most people combine it with a few hours wandering Tamsui’s old street for snacks and the famous sunset at Fisherman’s Wharf. The ride itself is easy; even beginners and families manage it without issue. Total distance for a comfortable half-day loop is usually 15–25 km round trip depending how far you push it.
Best time is October to early April when it’s cooler and less humid. Summers are brutally hot, humid, and rainy—skip it then unless you love sweating. Expect to pay around NT$300–600 total per person including bike rental (YouBike or shop rentals), a simple lunch or snacks, and transport back if you don’t ride both ways. One solid tip: start from Tamsui Old Street rather than the city center so you get the nicer scenery first and finish with food and sunset. Skip the overpriced cafés near the wharf and just grab stinky tofu, iron eggs, or shaved ice from the old street vendors instead.
