The Maokong gondola lifts you from the edge of Taipei up into the tea-covered hills in about 20-30 minutes. You’ll ride in glass-bottomed cabins that sway a bit when the wind picks up; the views over the city and the forested ridges are genuinely impressive on clear days. At the top you’ll find quiet walking paths, small teahouses serving oolong, and a relaxed mountain village atmosphere. It’s a half-day trip at most. Expect to pay around NT$200–400 per person depending on whether you buy a one-way, round-trip, or combo ticket that includes the return bus or nearby attractions.
Go on a weekday morning in winter or early spring for the clearest air and fewest crowds; summer weekends can be hot, hazy, and packed. Pick the standard gondola car unless you really want the glass floor (the novelty wears off fast and those cars often have longer lines). Skip the overpriced cafés right at the station and walk 10–15 minutes uphill to the smaller teahouses instead. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and check the weather—fog or heavy rain turns the whole ride into a gray blur.
