Should You Visit Temples in Ho Chi Minh City?

Temple visits in Ho Chi Minh City mix quiet incense-filled halls with bustling courtyards where locals pray, chat, and go about their day. Expect a sensory experience: heavy smoke, chanting, bright colors, and a surprising amount of noise at the more popular spots. The big draw is usually the Cao Dai temple at Tay Ninh, about two hours away, where you’ll see an eye-popping cathedral-like building and, if timed right, the colorful midday service with musicians and robed followers. In the city itself, smaller Chinese-style pagodas and Vietnamese Buddhist temples are calmer and quicker to visit. Most people do these as half- or full-day trips rather than solo wandering.

Best time is the dry season from December to April when it’s cooler and less sweaty. Avoid Tet if you don’t like crowds. Expect to pay around $15–40 per person for a half-day guided trip including transport; full-day tours that bundle temples with tunnels or other sights usually run $35–70. Entry fees are low or free.

Pick the Cao Dai temple if you want something visually striking and genuinely different. Skip the Temple of Literature unless you’re really into historic exam halls; it’s pleasant but feels more like a park than a living temple. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, and bring small bills for incense or donations. Go early to beat the heat and tour groups.
