Should You Visit Temples in Bali?

Temple visits are one of the most worthwhile things you can do in Bali if you want to see something beyond beaches and rice terraces. Expect a mix of impressive architecture, strong incense smell, and varying levels of peace depending on the crowds. Most major temples require a simple sarong and sash (usually provided or rented for a small fee). The experience is fairly relaxed but still respectful – no loud talking, no climbing on statues. A full-day tour typically covers 3–4 temples plus some driving through countryside. It’s genuinely interesting for half a day to a full day, but can feel repetitive if you’re not into religious sites.

Best time is the dry season (May–September) when roads aren’t flooded and you won’t be drenched. Early morning is ideal to avoid the worst crowds and heat. Expect to pay around $45–90 per person for a decent private tour with transport, guide, and water; cheaper group tours exist but often feel rushed. Solo drivers with a scooter are possible but stressful if you don’t know the routes.

Pick a balanced mix: something like a mountain temple with views and a quieter one in the east or center. Skip the most hyped ones on weekends if you dislike crowds. One honest tip – combine temples with a good lunch stop rather than trying to cram in six sites. Another: wear comfortable shoes and bring cash for small donations and sarong fees.
