Topkapi Palace: Worth It?

Topkapi Palace is one of Istanbul's biggest draws, a sprawling 15th-century complex where Ottoman sultans lived for 400 years. Expect crowds, especially around the main courtyard and holy relics section. The palace itself is more about atmosphere and views than lavish interiors - think tiled pavilions, armory displays, and stunning Bosphorus overlooks from the terraces. A standard visit takes 1.5-2 hours; adding the harem (the sultan's private quarters) pushes it to 3 hours total. The harem is atmospheric with its narrow corridors and tiled rooms but can feel claustrophobic when busy.

Go in shoulder season (April, May, September or October) to avoid the worst summer heat and cruise-ship crowds. Expect to pay around $40-70 total per person: basic entry runs $25-35, the harem ticket adds another $15-20, and a decent guided tour bumps it up further. Skip the audio guide if you're short on time; many find them dry. My honest take: get skip-the-line tickets if visiting in peak season, do the main palace and terrace for the views, but only add the harem if you're genuinely into Ottoman domestic life - otherwise the extra time and money are better spent at the nearby Basilica Cistern or wandering the Bosphorus waterfront.
