Trabi Safari in Berlin: Worth It?

A Trabi Safari is exactly what it sounds like: you get to drive (or ride in) one of those noisy, smoky, two-stroke plastic cars that were the everyday vehicle of East Germany. A guide leads a convoy of 4–8 Trabis through the city while you listen to commentary through a crackly radio. Expect to putter along at 30–40 km/h, smell exhaust, stall a few times, and feel mildly ridiculous in the best possible way. You’ll see major sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, and remnants of the Wall, but the real point is the car itself. It’s equal parts history lesson, comedy show, and tourist spectacle.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September). Summer is busiest but the weather is most reliable; shoulder months have fewer crowds. Expect to pay around €80–€130 per person depending on whether you drive yourself, take a passenger spot, or book a private tour. The shorter 75-minute version is usually enough; the two-hour tours mostly just add more traffic jams.

Tip: Drive if you’re confident in a manual with a weird shifter and don’t mind being stared at. Otherwise take the passenger seat and save the stress. Skip the “luxury” or “private” upsells unless you really hate sharing the road with other tourists — the standard group tour already gives you the full absurd experience.
