Traditional Hammam in Marrakesh: What to Know

A traditional hammam is a steam bath where you sit in a hot, tiled room while attendants scrub you vigorously with a rough glove (kessa) and black soap. Expect to be splashed with buckets of warm water, get a full-body exfoliation that leaves you pink and smooth, then usually a massage with argan oil. It’s not a quiet spa; it’s communal, sometimes noisy, and very wet. Locals have been doing this weekly for centuries to clean off the dust and heat. The first time can feel intense – you’re half-naked on a marble slab being scrubbed by a stranger – but most travelers come out saying it’s one of the most authentically Moroccan things they did.

Go between October and April when the weather isn’t scorching. Summer hammams feel suffocating. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD for a basic hammam plus massage at a decent local place; tourist-oriented ones with extras can run 600–900 MAD. Skip the fancy riad spas if you want the real thing – they’re often diluted for Western tastes. Pick a mid-range neighborhood hammam (men and women have separate hours or sections). Bring your own underwear or disposable ones are usually provided. Don’t overthink the nudity; everyone is focused on getting clean.
