Is a Tram Ride in Porto Worth It?

Porto's old trams rattle along steep tracks and give you a pleasant, slightly bouncy ride through the city's older neighborhoods. Expect wooden benches, big windows, and a top speed that rarely exceeds a brisk walk. The route along the river is the clear winner: you get decent views of the Douro, passing old buildings and the occasional glimpse of the bridges. The inland lines are shorter, noisier, and mostly useful for getting from one hill to another. Crowds are common in summer; you'll often stand or share a bench with strangers. The whole experience lasts 20-45 minutes depending on the line.

Best time is spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the trams are less packed. In July and August it gets hot inside and the queues can be long. Expect to pay around €6-10 per person for a single ride or hop-on hop-off ticket; family tickets or day passes sometimes bring it down to roughly €20-30 total. One solid tip: always sit on the right side when heading west toward the river – that's where the views are. Skip the short circular routes in the city center unless you just want the nostalgic rattle; they're overpriced for what you actually see.
