Should You Walk Uhuru Park in Nairobi?

Uhuru Park is a large, well-used public green space right in central Nairobi. Expect a mix of joggers, families, office workers on lunch break, and street vendors. The paths around the small lake are pleasant, there are decent skyline views of the city center, and the new fountains and skate area add some life. It feels more like a busy urban park than a quiet nature escape. A guided walking tour usually lasts 2–2.5 hours and combines the park with nearby landmarks and some historical context. On its own the park is easy to visit independently, but the guided version gives structure and a bit of safety reassurance in an area that still sees occasional petty theft.

The best time is during the dry seasons (June to October or late December to March) when the grass is shorter and paths are less muddy. Early morning (before 9am) or late afternoon tends to be nicest. Expect to pay around $50–70 for a half-day guided walking tour with hotel pickup. Independent entry to the park itself is cheap, basically pocket money. Tip: skip the pedal boats—they’re usually in poor condition and not worth the time. Do take the short loop that climbs the small hill for the best views of the city and parliament buildings; that part is genuinely pleasant.
