Edinburgh Underground Vaults: Worth It?

The Edinburgh vaults are a series of dark, damp chambers beneath the South Bridge. Expect a 75-minute walking tour with a guide telling ghost stories, local history, and tales of the people who once lived or worked down there. It's atmospheric – low ceilings, uneven floors, occasional puddles – but not scary like a haunted house attraction. You'll stand in a few different vaults while the guide talks; there's not much to see beyond bare stone and occasional modern props. It's genuinely interesting if you like history mixed with a bit of the macabre, but can feel crowded and touristy in peak times.

Best time is spring or autumn on a weekday morning. Summer gets packed and the vaults feel stuffier; winter can be bitterly cold underground. Expect to pay around £35-£55 per person depending on time of day and group size. Book the standard historical tour rather than the 'ghost hunting' or 'extreme fright' versions – the latter are mostly theatrical and less satisfying. Skip the add-on whisky tasting unless you specifically want a drink at the end; it doesn't add much to the vaults experience itself.
