A vineyard visit is one of the easiest and most satisfying day trips from Santiago. Most valleys (Casablanca, Maipo, Colchagua) are 45–90 minutes away, so you can leave after breakfast and be back for dinner. Expect rolling hills, long tasting tables, and generous pours of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Tours usually include two or three wineries, a guided tasting, and a simple lunch. The experience is relaxed rather than stuffy—think jeans and sneakers, not suits.
The best time is March to May (harvest season) when the vines are full and the weather is mild. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hotter and busier; winter (Jun–Aug) can be chilly and some restaurants close. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person for a half-day group tour including transport and lunch; private tours start closer to $200–$350. Add $20–$40 if you want a premium tasting or bottle to take home.
Pick a morning departure so you’re not rushing the last tasting. Skip the absolute cheapest bus-and-winery combos—they often feel rushed and skip the good producers. If you like white wines, head to Casablanca; for robust reds, Maipo is simpler and closer. Book directly or through a reliable local operator, and always confirm they include lunch if you’re hungry by 1 pm.
