Water Skiing in Mauritius: What You Need to Know

Water skiing in Mauritius is straightforward and fun if you already have some balance and athletic ability. Most sessions last 15-25 minutes behind a speedboat on calm lagoon water, usually in the morning before the wind picks up. Expect warm water (no wetsuit needed), decently maintained equipment, and instructors who give you a quick lesson then let you go. It's not the most spectacular waterskiing on earth but it's reliable, the views of the coastline are nice, and falls are soft. If you've never tried it before, this is a pleasant place to learn.

The best time is May to November when the southeast trade winds are lighter on the west and north coasts. December to April brings hotter weather, rougher seas, and more rain, so sessions get cancelled more often. Expect to pay around $45-80 for a 15-20 minute tow including basic instruction and equipment; longer packages or combos with wakeboarding or tubing push toward the higher end. Hotels often mark it up, so booking directly with a watersports centre saves money.

Pick a calm morning on the west coast (Flic en Flac or Grand Baie area) if possible. Skip the big group boat trips that bundle skiing with parasailing and banana boats unless you enjoy crowded, noisy experiences. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and water shoes if your feet are soft – the boats can be hot and the sand gritty.
