Snorkeling in Mauritius: What You Need to Know

Most snorkeling tours in Mauritius take you by boat to the reefs around the northern islands or the southwest coast. Expect a half- or full-day trip with two or three stops, basic snorkel gear, and a guide who points out fish and turtles. The water is warm and clear enough that you’ll see plenty even if you’re a beginner, but don’t expect untouched wilderness—popular sites can get crowded with several boats at once. The experience is relaxed rather than adrenaline-filled: you’ll spend more time floating and looking down than swimming hard.

The best months are October to April when the sea is usually calmer and visibility is better. From May to September the southeast trade winds make the east and south coast choppier, so stick to the protected west or north. Expect to pay around $50–90 for a half-day tour and $80–130 for a full day with lunch. Private or small-group options sit at the higher end; large bus tours are cheaper but less personal.

Pick a smaller boat that limits numbers to 10–12 people if you can—it makes a big difference in both comfort and reef pressure. Skip the tours that advertise “swim with dolphins” as a guarantee; wild dolphins are hit-or-miss and chasing them stresses the animals. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them—rental gear is often old and leaks.
